102 Not Out Movie Review: Unique Innings!

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor & Jimit Trivedi

Direction: Umesh Shukla

Duration: 101 Minutes (1 Hour 47 Minutes)

Nikhil’s Rating: ***1/2

It is very rare to experience a small film that sees a reunion of two iconic superstars of the Hindi Film industry, that too after a gap of 27 years. According to my knowledge this has never occurred up until now. Based on a Gujarati play of the same name, 102 Not Out narrates a story of a 102 year old “dad” played by Amitabh Bachchan and a 75 year old “son” played by Rishi Kapoor.

That tag line alone is more than enough to spend your cash on. The film essentially explores the dynamics & emotions that aged people go through in a light hearted & entertaining manner. The film written by Saumya Joshi, 102 Not Out is an exploration of outlooks & perspectives through the lenses of these two characters & how ultimately one should LIVE a life. If I divulge the plot, it would spoil the fun of watching this film.

Amitabh Bachchan plays a 102 year old man with elan. His Gujarati accent and dialogue delivery is a treat to watch. In the last 5-6 years, Rishi Kapoor has found very interesting roles such as the grandpa in Kapoor & Sons or as the Director of Saint T’s in Student of the Year, just to name a few. Here he excels in playing a son to Amitabh Bachchan.

Director Umesh Shukla narrates this simple yet layered story with utmost honesty and sincerity. His last film, OMG: Oh My God explored the themes of religion, godmen and its commercialisation. At 101 Minutes, this film is replete with moments & dialogues that are hilarious and bring a smile to the audience’s faces long after the end credits roll. This film is definitely worth watching especially to explore a relationship that has never-been- seen before in Hindi Cinema.
